Previously a coal yard, my clients had acquired a plot of land and an old timber building adjacent to their existing front garden. They had reclaimed part of the area to establish a small vegetable garden and as keen gardeners, wished to develop the plot further.
With a large 'naturalistic style rear garden including hay meadow and woodland areas, they felt the new plot should be developed in a more ornamental style. (Providing an intimate space and a separate garden in its own right). The main requirements for the design were:
- To contrast with the 'natural' style of the rear garden
- Provision for a mixture of vegetables, herbs & flowers
- A secluded area for seating
- Screening to the road boundary
- Additional parking and tractor access to the rear garden
- Retention of existing hedges within the plot
- A compost/utility area
Unsure about retaining the old timber building, I suggested it could be renovated and integrated into the overall design. This would provide a garden room, storage, potting shed and a link to the house with a pergola. On completion of the initial design I was commissioned to provide planting plans for the herb beds and perennial borders.
