Paul has undertaken a number of projects that have focused on the ‘naturalistic’ style of planting using predominantly perennials and grasses to create atmosphere and structure within the garden. These projects have usually been on a large scale but the development of a small garden in North Yorkshire shows how this style can work exceptionally well on a smaller site.
"The construction of a new garage had created an additional enclosed garden area within this substantial but exposed rural plot. My clients wished to develop this new space to create a sheltered seating area surrounded by planting. A low hedge formed the perimeter boundary, outside which were spectacular views over the surrounding countryside.
"My aim was to develop a design which would both harmonise with the surrounding environment whilst offering strong visual interest and enclosure within the garden site. An organically shaped gravelled area formed a seating area, which was to be surrounded by informal planting. Shaped to echo the domed landscape beyond and linked to other areas of the garden by gravel paths, it provided a simple, practical and structured ground plan to complement the planting scheme. Yorkstone paving is recycled to form a path to the garage and coalbunker, which had to be located within the space.
"Plants were selected from perennials and grasses which would provide a long season of interest, height and movement, whilst not excluding views out of the site but harmonising with it. An under planting of spring bulbs was used to extend the season of interest." (PAW)
